The Live Paint Bucket tool only works on live paint groups (objects), and live paint groups can only be paths, including shapes that are created from paths (pen tool paths, strokes, etc).įor example, I’ve created this simple drawing using the pen tool and paintbrush. Windows or other versions can look different. Note: all screenshots from this tutorial are taken from Adobe Illustrator CC Mac version. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to use Live Paint Bucket and what to do when the Live Paint Bucket is not working. However, in Adobe Illustrator, there’s an important step that you have to take before using the Live Paint Bucket – you have to make your path or shapes into live paint groups. If you’re a Photoshop user, you’d find it so easy to use this tool because the live paint bucket in Adobe Illustrator is basically the same as the paint bucket tool in Photoshop, which you use for filling color. Meaning, Live Paint Bucket only works on closed paths or when there are small gaps between your paths. That will be covered in a future tutorial.Live Paint Bucket is a convenient way to color your artwork if your artwork isn’t a sketch. The drawing can be further refined by adding arrows or text to illustrate different features of the building, and more photo-real scenery or structure elements can be added in via Photoshop, as seen below. Now click on the live paint bucket and paint away (Shortcut: K). Live Paint Bucket is a powerful tool that gives you the ability to apply color attributes to shapes based on their appearance, not based on the way they were. Optional: Lock the layer to ensure none of the lines are accidentally moved while live painting the group below. Set the visibility of the original linework layer to on. The best way I found to do this is by double clicking the live paint group to isolate the objects, select all of the lines, and then set the line color to none. The tool pointer displays as either one or three color squares, which represent the selected fill or stroke color and, if you’re using colors from a swatch library, the two colors adjacent to the selected color in the library. That’s all good and done, but since we’re using another layer for the linework which we may be editing layer, it’s best to hide the lines in the live paint group. The Live Paint Bucket tool lets you paint faces and edges of Live Paint groups with the current fill and stroke attributes. Go up to the object menu > live paint > make. Make sure Fill is active, then go to the Tool Bar, click and hold on the Shape Builder Tool and select the Live Paint Bucket Tool which is nested. The Process Select the whole sketch, then click on it with the Live Paint Bucket tool (found under the shape builder tool). Turn off the layer with the original linework and then select everything that is left on the artboard (the lines for the live paint group). K on your keyboard, it will bring up the Live Paint Bucket Tool. One with all the original linework, and a second to be used to make a live paint group. Essentially what Live Paint is is a very fast way to select a set of paths and fills. This download provides screenshots to show you how to. The image to the right shows how I have my layers set up. When you draw in Adobe InDesign CC, you may find that you have trouble filling your shapes with color. But since we want to be able to edit the linework later, we’ll make a copy to use for our live paint group. The first step is to make a live paint group out of the linework of the drawing.
